Astoria Sprouts is a forest school for young children based 100% outside. Forest schools are the U.S. version of Forest Kindergartens (Waldgindergartens), which have been popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia for decades. The movement has seen marked growth in the United States in the last ten years, especially during Covid. Locally, forest schools exist in Prospect Park, Central Park, Forest Park, Sunset Park, and various pocket parks throughout NYC. Astoria Sprouts will be the first dedicated forest school in our neighborhood!
It is the mission of Astoria Sprouts to steward the health of our community by fostering life-long relationships with the natural world. Through nature immersion, movement, and socio-emotional awareness, we teach respect for self, others, and the Earth. We honor differences and celebrate diversity, underpinned by the belief that all children will benefit and flourish when time is spent communing with others in the great outdoors.
Do you love spending time with children and in the outdoors? If so, please apply. Opportunities for growth are available. Requirements and preferences are as follows:

Must love spending time with children and have experience doing so, preferably in an educational and/or outdoor setting;

Must be comfortable outside in all kinds of weather, including in the snow, rain, and cold;

Must be reliable and punctual. In providing care for children, we are providing social infrastructure to families and communities. Flakiness will not be tolerated;

Must have or be willing to get CPR certification;

Must have or be working towards a Bachelor’s degree, not necessarily in education;

Must be flexible and amenable to meet the needs of our our forest school as we grow and to meet the ever evolving needs of our families/community;

Those with arts, music, yoga, outdoorsy backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
